Details on the required newspaper publication of your business name.
California Business and Professions Code Section 17917 requires that the filer of a new Fictitious Business Name Statement, or renewal Fictitious Business Name Statement that contains changes, shall cause it to be published in a local newspaper of general circulation in the county where the principal place of business is located. It is the responsibility of the filer to determine if publication of a renewal Fictitious Business Name is necessary. Publication must be done once a week for four successive weeks, beginning within 30 days after filing and concluding within 28 days of the first publication date.
The Recorder’s Office must receive proof of publication (called an affidavit of publication) within 30 days of the final publication date.
The affidavit of publication should be forwarded from the newspaper to the Recorder’s Office; however, the filer should assume responsibility to ensure the affidavit is mailed in a timely manner and the Recorder’s Office receives the affidavit of publication from the newspaper within 30 days after the completion of the publication.
