Solicitations for Assessed Value Reductions

Assessor Dale Flippin is alerting the public that property owners may receive direct mail solicitations, suggesting they qualify for a reduced value assessment.  The solicitations look very official, but they are not from a government agency.  While this is not an illegal business practice, the solicitation can be somewhat deceptive.  Typically a fee is charged that allows an outside agent to interact with the local Assessor's office, on behalf of the property owner.  As a rule, there is no mention that the property owner can interact with the Assessor's Office directly, for no cost.

One such company, based out of Los Angeles, charges a $179 processing fee to review a property value and act as an agent.  The solicitation then states that a $30 late fee will be charged if not received by February 26th, 2009.  If a property owner receives a similar solicitation, they should review the information very carefully.

Additionally, property owners should remember that the Assessor's Office does not charge a fee to review a property value.  If you feel your property deserves a value review, please call us to discuss your property and individual situation.

Taxpayers will find further assessment information on this web site, or may call the Assessor's Customer Service Line at (530) 265-1232.

UPDATE May 13, 2009
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Consumer Protection Division has filed criminal charges against the operator of a private company, Property Tax Reassessment, which offered to "assist" with the filing of property tax reassessment forms for substantial fees.  To see the entire District Attorney's statement, follow this link to their web site:
