District 5 Supervisor

William H. "Hank" Weston was elected as County Supervisor for District 4 in June 2006 and was sworn in on January 8, 2007. He was selected Vice-Chair in 2008 and Chair in 2009. Hank has worked and lived in Nevada County since 1989. He is no stranger to public service, having served for over 45 years with a number of California fire protection agencies.

Hank began his career in fire services as a volunteer, when he was just 15 years old. He was hired by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF), initially as a seasonal firefighter. He then spent two-and-a-half years in the US Army's Counter-Intelligence Corps. After returning to college, Hank continued in his career path, being promoted through the ranks to eventually become CDF Unit Chief of Nevada, Yuba, Placer, Sierra and Sutter Counties. During that period he served seven years as the Nevada County Fire Warden. Following 36 years with CDF, Hank served as Fire Chief for Grass Valley City Fire Department from 1997 to 2006.

During his career, Hank's administrative positions have included a wealth of leadership and management duties. His responsibilities meant he frequently had oversight for directing large-scale programs, complex budgets and leadership of hundreds of employees.

Hank has been a member and officer of several professional and community organizations. These include Nevada County Law Enforcement and Fire Protection Council (vice president); Nevada County Emergency Service Joint Powers Authority (chairman); California FIRESCOPE (board member); California Office of Emergency Services, Fire and Rescue (regional coordinator for 12 counties); Nevada County Fire Safe Council (board member); Penn Valley Fire Protection District (board member); and Penn Valley Rotary Club. Additionally, Hank holds a lifetime Community College teaching credential and is a retired peace officer with Advanced POST certification.

In addition to serving as Supervisor, Hank serves on a number of advisory committees and commissions, including the First Five Nevada County Children & Families First Commission, the Sierra Sacramento Valley Emergency Medical Services Joint Powers Authority Governing Board, and the Solid and Hazardous Waste Commission.  He also chairs the Emergency Services Council and the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCo). This year, Hank will again serve on the County Budget Review Committee in his role as Board Chair.

Hank and his wife, Kandy, live in the Lake Wildwood community. Married 37 years, they have two grown daughters; one is a nurse practitioner and the other owns an accounting business.
