The prosecution of felony and misdemeanor crimes of child abuse including sexual molestation, physical abuse, neglect, and homicide are assigned to one Deputy District Attorney. This attorney has received specialized training in child abuse prosecution; this training includes the medical, psychological, social and legal issues involved in these cases. The cases are handled in a vertical prosecution format. This means that one attorney is assigned the matter at the time law enforcement submits the case to the District Attorney's Office for review. The same attorney handles the case at all major stages and hearings.
