Farm Advisor

The Farm Advisor Department is a cooperative venture between the County of Nevada, the University of California, and the United States Department of Agriculture. The Farm Advisor Department provides educational and technical assistance to local residents in the area of agriculture, home economics, and youth and community development.

Expertise is provided by University paid farm advisors in the areas of horticulture, livestock, pasture and range management, irrigation, farm planning, ag economics, small farms, ag marketing, soils, water, pest and disease control.

Home economics and consumer education is provided in the areas of nutrition and food buying, food safety and preservation and parent education. University-trained Master Gardener and Master Food Preserver volunteers support the above programs.

In the area of youth and community development, the Farm Advisor Department administers the 4-H Community Club program which serves over five hundred youngsters and two hundred adult volunteers annually. The 4-H School-age Child Care Program also is administered through this department, which operates at nine elementary schools in the county serving over nine hundred children annually.

Additionally, the department serves as liaison with the University of California and the hundreds of campus-based Cooperative Extension specialists. Hundreds of publications, leaflets, newsletters, and audio visual materials are available through the department, in addition to trainings, workshops and educational short courses.
