A WAY WITH WORDS

Our A Way With Words
THE WINNERS of the Writing Contest for December were:

"Put yourself in the shoes of your parent or guardian...pretend its time to give your teen (YOU!) advice on intimate/dating relationships. Talk about your values, your expectations, and how you will be there for your teen. Remember, make it what you think would have been helpful to you. Make it what you would like the "ideal" advice to be.

THE WINNERS ARE:
Nick-2

Dear Nick,
I am so proud to be your father, and I love you very much. I just want to tell you about my values, my expectations, and how much I love you. I have some values I hope you will agree with also. I believe that you should be able to come and talk to me about anything. Even if I don’t support, like, or condone what it is, I will not put you down for what it is. There are some expectations I have for your life I hope you will agree with too. I believe you should attend college, and have a job so you can support your family because I won’t always be around. Last but not least I want to tell you how much I love you. I am so proud of you. I never thought I would have a kid as good as you. I will always be here for you. So those are my feelings on my values, expectations, and how much I love you.

Dillan-4

Dear Dillan,
I am very proud to be your father. In this letter I will explain my values, expectations, and how I will always be there for you. My values for you are to be successful in life. Being successful will make you a happier and stronger person. It will also give you a sense of pride. You don’t want to stress about little things like paying bills or buying food. My expectations include not messing around with girls. I know it’s hard being 16 years old but it will pay off when you’re older. You don’t want to have a child at your age. That would devastate your whole life. Just focus on the task at hand.
I only say all this because I care. You know I will always be there for you no matter the circumstance. You are my flesh and blood I would never let you fall down. In my eyes you will always be number one. Know that I will always love you. Love, Dad

Katie-4

Dear Katie,
Since you’re getting older, you are probably experiencing some changes in life. So in this letter I’d like to share with you my values, expectations, and my love for you. When you start dating and liking guys, there are a few important things you should know. First of all, they need to be worth your time. If he treats you badly or abuses you in any way, he is most definitely a waste of your energy. He needs to respect you and your priorities so your relationship can last. You shouldn’t settle for anything less than you expect out of a guy. If you start dating and taking relationships seriously, I expect you to keep your priorities and live the life you’ve dreamed of living. You shouldn’t have to change a thing about you to try to impress someone because in the end, you end up losing yourself. If or when you become intimate, I expect you to be responsible and safe. Having children should come after marriage and there are many ways of birth control. I’ve always believed that everyone learns from their mistakes. So even if you’re not perfect, I’ll always love you the same. Remember, you have a family that cares about you and will support any decision you make. I will be there if you need help, or just need to talk. I hope you take in some of the advice I have just given you. I want to see you achieve in life and make the best of it.
Love Forever, Mom
