What is Adult Protective Services?
The Social Services Department of the County of Nevada, Adult Protective Services (APS), provides a support system to elderly and dependent adults who may be subject to neglect, physical abuse or exploitation, or who are unable to protect their own best interests. Investigations are done routinely by APS Social Workers, sometimes with other agencies, such as law enforcement and other health care professionals.

Who is served by APS?
The adult population covered by these laws includes seniors or elders who are 65 years of age or older and dependent adults 18-64 years of age. Nevada County APS can investigate allegations of abuse and provide assessments and service plans for need. These services may include referrals to other community agencies and some tangible services such as shelter and food if needed.

What is Adult/Elder abuse?
There are several types of abuse.

• Physical abuse
• Verbal abuse
• Sexual assault
• Neglect
• Abandonment
• Isolation
• Financial Abuse
• Deprivation by a care custodian of goods or services necessary to avoid physical harm or mental suffering

If abuse occurs in a licensed facility or home, such as a nursing home or assisted living facility, abuse is reported to the local Ombudsman and investigated by their staff. APS investigates reports made on individuals who live outside of licensed homes or facilities. Our local Ombudsman can be reached at 530-274-2825.

Who Must Make a Report to APS?
Abuse reporting laws now require certain groups of people to report known or suspected abuse. These people are called Mandated Reporters. These are generally individuals who are involved with elders and dependent adults. This includes care custodians, health practitioners, law, enforcement, paramedics, banks and fire fighters. Reporters must file an abuse report when they observe or suspect abuse.

Who Can Make a Report to APS?
ANYONE, ANYTIME! Reports can be called in at anytime to our office. Reports and the reporting parties are kept confidential.
