Marriage Licenses and Ceremonies
Information on marriage licenses and civil ceremonies.

How do we obtain a marriage license?
The Recorder’s Office is located in the west wing, second floor of the Rood Center, 950 Maidu Avenue in Nevada City. Marriage licenses can be issued between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Come in at any time between those hours and we will assist you. Map to the Rood Center.

Truckee: Nevada County’s Health Department issues marriage licenses. Map to the Truckee County offices. Hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Applicants must make an appointment to apply for a marriage license: (530)582-7814.

Marriage ceremonies are available at the Clerk-Recorder’s Office in Nevada City; they are not performed by the Health Department staff in Truckee.

Can we have our marriage ceremony performed in your office?
Yes. If you wish to have our staff perform your marriage ceremony, you may request an appointment using our online form or by calling our office at 530-265-1221. Although an appointment is not required, couples with appointments will be served before those walking in. Additional information is available on the online form page. The cost for our office performing the ceremony is $40 . After the ceremony, you may purchase a certified copy of the marriage license for $13.00.

Truckee:
Marriage ceremonies are not performed by the Health Department in Truckee. They are only available through the Clerk-Recorder’s Office staff in Nevada City.

Do I need an appointment to get our marriage license?
We do not make appointments for marriage licenses. Simply come into our offices when you are ready. Since it takes some time for us to process your paperwork, we ask that you be here no later than 3:30 PM.

Truckee:
Applicants must make an appointment to apply for a marriage license: (530) 582-7814.
What do I need to get a marriage license?
    If you are obtaining a PUBLIC marriage license and you are over 18 years of age, you simply need photo identification. Both parties to the marriage must be present when obtaining a public marriage license. If either of the parties to the marriage are under 18 years of age, please contact the Probation office at (530) 265-1300 for further information.

    If you are obtaining a CONFIDENTIAL marriage license, you must be over 18 years of age and you simply need photo identification. Both parties to the marriage must also be present when obtaining a confidential marriage license.

Public record
License good for 90 days
License can be used throughout the state of California
Current fee is $72.00

CONFIDENTIAL LICENSE
Not available for public inspection
License good for 90 days
License can only be used in the county where purchased
Current fee is $74.00
Couple must have lived together
How long is a marriage license good for?
The marriage license is only good for 90 days from the date issued. If not used within 90 days, a new license must be obtained.
What happens to the license after the ceremony?
After the ceremony, the license is completed by the person performing the ceremony and is returned to our office. It is required that the license be returned within 10 days after the ceremony. Once we receive the license and it is correct, we register the license. At that time, you may purchase a copy of the license either by telephone, mail or in person. The cost of the certified copy of the license is currently $13.00 if paid in person, $16 if by mail or $16 plus $6 credit card fee if by phone.

Can we have our marriage ceremony performed by a Judge in the Courthouse?
Yes. A Judge can perform a marriage ceremony at the Courthouse, Monday through Friday by appointment only. Call (530) 265-1751 for an appointment.
