Explorer Post 244 Program

Purpose & GoalsThe Explorer Post is primarily a program for youth who are interested in a future career in law enforcement. Services to Citizens- The members perform fingerprint projects, parking details, bicycle safety programs at schools, drug education presentations, and assist the department in clerical functions.
- The Post also assists assorted community service groups in the their projects.
General Information- The Scouting Program, or Explorer Post 244 that is sponsored by the Sheriff’s Office has been in existence since 1975. Many former members of the program are full time peace officers throughout California.
- It has been under the leadership of the same officer, Deputy Rob Davenport, since 1979, and has grown from five members to a steady membership of twenty members. The membership is from local youth and is for both female and male young adults.
- Post 244 members can attend training conferences and have the opportunity to attend both regional and national Boy Scout Scouts of America (BSA) functions.
- Funding for the program primarily comes from the local County Fair where the Post 244 members provide a lost child center, wheelchair and stroller rental, and sell snow cones to the attending public. Another source of donated funds is the Nevada County Deputy Sheriff’s Association.
- The highest honor in Law Enforcement Exploring was awarded to Post 244 and to the sponsoring agency. In 1990 the National Youth Law Enforcement Explorer Chair was a member of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office program. This youth represented all law enforcement Explorers in the nation for 1990. The advisor, Rob Davenport, was awarded the Silver Bear from the BSA. This recognizes the efforts by the leadership to make an effective scouting program.
- Adult leadership of the program is provided by the deputies of the department who perform guidance without compensation. The primary leader of Post 244 has been trained as a BSA leader at the local level and with national trainers of the BSA at the BSA headquarters in Irving, Texas. There is no compensation for the Post 244 advisor who most often gives up time from his family to make the program successful.
