The primary mission of the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCo) is to encourage the orderly growth and development of the local agencies within the county, in accordance with the policies and procedures established by the State Legislature in the Cortese-Knox Local Government Reorganization Act of 1985, Section 56000, et seq. of the Government Code.
LAFCo's responsibilities include the review and approval of the formation of public agencies, a change in boundaries of existing agencies, and other changes in organization of local agencies, such as consolidations. LAFCo's efforts are directed toward encouraging the efficient and economic delivery of public services, and the preservation of agricultural and open-space lands.
Information about LAFCo's responsibilities may be found at on the What is LAFCo document (PDF) or by reading our FAQs. You may find the agenda and materials for the most recent meeting of the commission at LAFCo Meeting Information.
