As the Board of Supervisors wraps up their annual workshop, community members are encouraged to engage with their local government through the County’s 2020 Citizen’s Academy.  Nevada County is now accepting applications for its 7th year of Citizen’s Academy which offers a behind the scenes look at County government. Participants tour six 6 County facilities and learn from over twenty department presentations that cover a wide range of services from A (Agriculture) to Z (Zoning).

"A common theme across all policy initiatives discussed at the workshop was the importance of an unified community strategy." said Alison Lehman, County Executive Officer. "We recognize well informed residents are key to our success and know the more details we share about our work helps move the needle on the important issues facing our county."

The board workshop offers an opportunity to review priorities and create strategies for staff to best implement solutions. Although open to the public, no formal votes are taken until the Board’s February 11th meeting.

"I gained a valuable understanding of the scope of county services, as well as insight into the complex budgeting process," said Citizen’s Academy participant, Susan Meagher. "I came away with a tremendous respect for the expertise of our county employees and officials."

Citizen’s Academy takes place on ten consecutive Monday evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. starting in late March through early June. Specific dates and topics for each session of Citizen’s Academy can be found on www.MyNevadaCounty.com/CitizensAcademy.

The goal of Citizen’s Academy is to increase civic engagement within Nevada County and acquaint community leaders with the various functions of County government. The program has over 100 graduates of Citizen’s Academy to-date.

Applications are due February 14th.  Find more information and ways to apply at www.MyNevadaCounty.com/CitizensAcademy.
