District Attorney Press Release

NEWS RELEASE: Jury Finds Kenneth Byrnes Guilty

Nevada City—Cliff Newell, Nevada County District Attorney, announced today that a jury found the defendant, Kenneth Byrnes, Guilty of Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Child.  The defendant faces up to 16 years in state prison at sentencing.  He will be sentenced on January 11, 2019.  The charges stemmed from allegations of repeated acts of sexual abuse that took place years ago to a child the defendant had adopted.  Kenneth Byrnes was previously convicted of Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Child in 2011 for sexual abusing a different victim in the past.  At the sentencing on the prior case Kenneth Byrnes faced up to 12 years in prison, however Judge Anderson opted to grant the defendant probation.  District Attorney Cliff Newell was sharply critical of the sentence at the time.  After the verdict today Assistant District Attorney Chris Walsh stated “I hope this verdict provides closure and peace for the victims involved.  I also hope this verdict results in Kenneth Byrnes spending the rest of his life in prison where he belongs.”
